Let's be real, post-secondary education isn't easy, and no amount of advice or youtube videos can prepare you for it. Everyone's experience is different, so take tips and tricks from those around you with a grain of salt. This is your time and your experience, you will quickly find what methods of learning and studying work for you. However, I have found that there are some must-haves when starting (or continuing) your post-secondary journey. I hope you find them helpful!
1. Grab an agenda/day-planner! It's hard enough as it is to balance an exciting social life and sufficient sleep, adding the class to the mix isn't easy. An agenda will help you manage your time and prioritize tasks. From lecture times, to lunch with friends, put it all in your planner so you know when you're available. Plus, when someone wants to make plans with you, you can now truthfully say "let me check my calendar." And lastly, using an agenda has been proven to make you feel more accomplished. As you complete tasks, you can cross them off your list! You'll begin to realize just how much you are actually getting done and the semester will end much faster than you know. 2. Headphones are a major key! Whether you commute to school, or have to walk across campus for your next class...headphones keep your music on, and annoying peers away. Headphones also allow you to study in the library when people don't respect the "silent area" sign, or to listen to your favourite podcast (The Comfort Zone) as your waiting for class to start. This little piece of technology is so important, that the day I left them at home, I went to my school's bookstore and bought a new pair. Trust me...just make sure you have headphones. 3. Portable mug! One thing about post-secondary is that it is pricey. Tuition, textbooks, school material and commuting, they all cost us big bucks. One way to save money and avoid long lines, is to make sure you have your fresh cup of tea (or coffee, yuck!) for those early morning classes and labs. Not only will you stay awake, but you'll save a few coins over the semester. 4. USB! I'm just gonna go ahead an say it...you never realize how much you need one, until you don't have one. Walmart has cheap ones, don't break the bank sis. 5. A hobby!!! I CANNOT stress this enough. Please do some introspection, and find something you like to do that is independent from school or previous responsibilities. I am referring to reading, writing, travelling (if you got the coins), making jewelry, playing sports, watching movies, etc. As important as school and grades are, living a balanced life is important. One thing I quickly learned in first year is that life goes on and time waits for no one. School is a rite of passage, but other parts of your life should not be put on hold because of it. Lastly, treat yourself to mental-recharge days and a big-Mac when you ace your midterm. Go to the gym as often as you can, and watch the latest Marvel movie. Life, including post-secondary education is only as good as you make it. So whether you just started, are entering your junior year or even thinking of going back, I think these 5 things can benefit anyone with a busy schedule.
